How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows

Why Windows shows a blank HEIC thumbnail

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s default camera format on modern iPhones. It stores more detail in less space than older JPEG, but many Windows installs do not decode it until you add Microsoft’s HEIF / HEVC extensions from the Store — and those extensions are not always free or available on locked-down work PCs.

If you only need to open, email, or upload a handful of photos, converting to JPG or PNG is usually faster than chasing codecs across every machine you use.

Option A — Convert in the browser (no install)

1. Transfer HEIC files to the PC (USB cable with “transfer photos”, iCloud for Windows, Google Photos download, or AirDrop via a Mac in between).

2. Open Formato’s HEIC converter in Chrome or Edge. The English tool defaults to PNG for editing workflows, but you can switch the output to JPG in one click.

3. Drop the file, wait for the local conversion, and download. The photo is processed in your browser; it is not uploaded to our servers for conversion.

Use JPG for chat, forms, and email. Use PNG when you will crop or retouch. Keep the original HEIC if you still want the iPhone master file.

Option B — Install HEIF extensions (when you open HEIC daily)

If your job is full of iPhone deliveries every day, installing the HEIF Image Extensions (and sometimes HEVC Video Extensions) can make Explorer thumbnails work natively. On personal devices that is fine; on corporate laptops you may not have Store permission.

Even with codecs installed, some websites and PDF uploaders still reject HEIC. Keep the browser converter bookmarked for those cases.

Quality, size limits, and privacy

JPEG quality is adjustable in the tool. Higher quality means larger files; 85–92% is a practical range for sharing. PNG ignores the JPEG quality slider.

Formato caps max file size so conversion stays reliable in the browser. There is no daily conversion count in this version — processing happens on your device.

Because conversion is on-device, this path is preferable to random “email us your album” converters when photos include children, IDs in the background, or client work.
