HEIC in plain language
HEIC is a container; the image inside is often encoded with HEIF/HEVC techniques that compress better than classic JPEG at similar visual quality. iOS adopted it to keep more shots on device storage and in iCloud.
macOS Preview opens HEIC easily. Many Android phones and modern apps do too. Older Windows PCs and countless web upload forms still expect JPG or PNG.
HEIC vs JPEG vs PNG
JPEG (JPG) is universal and usually smaller for sharing. PNG is great for editing and sharp graphics. HEIC is efficient on Apple devices but less portable.
When portability matters, convert once and keep both the HEIC original and a JPG/PNG derivative if needed.
